How do I start a small farm / ranch?
My husband nad I are preparing to go to Texas A & M @ College Station. There will be major in agricultural industries and I am most Wildlife Biology. After college, we plan to build a house on 200acres his family owned and run a small farm / ranch. We want cattle, goats, chickens, pigs, rabbits, perhaps, and a couple of horses for our own use. I guess my questions is, How do we start? How can I find information on buying selling education and care for these animals? How to choose which breeds are better (Fairfield, TX) for us? How much land do you need per animal? What other factors are going to have a ranch / farm? Thank you very much
I wish I could remember the title of the book written by a guy who did exactly what you propose. His only regret was that he did not know how many times the veterinarian should be called. That would have made him choose animals over others. But he loved life. You own the land and is the only hard part … offering land prices. Just start buying and feeding your pet. Set up fences. Visit with all neighbors. The hours are long, but it may be the most business from scratch ..
